Thanks for posting this article. My parents used to take me to the Upper Cellar. I must have been about nine years old. There was a picture on the wall near the stage of a beatnik looking guy with shades and goatee–the caption said “Big brother is watching.” I remember seeing a guitarist / singer named Pat Foster–I’m pretty sure we saw him at the Upper Cellar. I liked him because of his bluesy style. In his musical intro to “John Henry” he would wrap his left hand around the neck of the guitar playing a simple but cool octave line– the low E string with his thumb and the high E with one of his fingers. It kind of sounded a like he was imitating the theme “Peter Gunn.” At age nine I thought this was pretty cool stuff. I wish someone would share some photos of the Upper Cellar. I also remember seeing Pat Foster at a coffeehouse located on what is now called Restaurant Row in Cardiff By The Sea. There was an old beach shack selling lots of sea shells. The coffeehouse was between the Coast Highway and the lagoon–about where the Ki’s and the Kraken are located today.
